How to handle it when you don't feel the Holy Spirit at work in your life?
Speaker 2:There have been times in my life where my perspective was off.
Speaker 1:I feel like I'm not getting the answer to the prayers at all.
Speaker 2:Holy Spirit came and checked me. Where is the Holy Spirit when it comes to a marriage? We're not perfect people.
Speaker 1:By any means.
Speaker 2:But by trusting in God we learn what it takes to build a friendship.
Speaker 1:A relationship.
Speaker 2:And marriage that has stood the test of time.
Speaker 1:With a Keeping it Real style. We're going to talk to you about everything everything that we've been through are going through and have overcome All by learning how to lean on God and each other.
Speaker 2:In order to help you learn how to love by faith.
Speaker 1:So I want to take people behind the curtain, because I just got here and was you're getting ready, and it came up and you're listening to your worship music, like you always do. Yes, and I think I think that it's hard for me as, like a non-worship leader, non-worship music, I'm not in the worship music scene. Okay, right, and so I always go back to like what worship music I started with when I was a new believer yeah, I go to look for worship music, that old school stuff, that early 2000s stuff old school in early 2000s that's like 25 years ago.
Speaker 1:Stop, it's not it. I was. I was to 2010s. I go 2010, you got a jars of clay you know I might might have some casting crowns in my rotation great, give it up for them shout out to casting crowns.
Speaker 2:Sometimes I feel like out to casting crowns. Sometimes I feel like they're the nickelback of Christian worship. They are.
Speaker 1:I wanted you to share. You shared with me a new artist you just found. I'm sure they're heard of by other people. Mercy, culture, worship.
Speaker 2:That's a mouthful.
Speaker 1:Mercy, culture, worship. Because I typed in Mercy Me and it was not, not Mercy Me, and I was like no, no, no, no, no, this isn't two different people.
Speaker 2:Yeah, mercy, I'll link it in the description.
Speaker 1:Who else are you into right now, oh?
Speaker 2:Who else?
Speaker 1:I've been going through a lot of worship lately A lot Trying to.
Speaker 2:You know, elevation is always. They always got hits. I started listening to Chandler Moore's new album, which, okay, I'm. There's a huge debate with Maverick City Worship, maverick City Music, and the debate is that they're not like they used to be.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 2:You know, they've evolved, they lost some people, they've gained some people and it's just not hitting the way it used to be. So I like that old pre-2020 Maverick City. You know Volume 1, volume 2, and those just always hit. They're just so deep. I love going deep into worship, I love connect. I said this in the episode previous last week. I love going deep into worship so that my Holy Spirit is activated, so that my spirit is activated with the Holy Spirit, and I just I love being in that place I feel connected.
Speaker 2:I love being in that place when I worship. If you let me go, I will worship, I will see the signs, I will see the visions, I will hear from God. I just I love being there.
Speaker 1:It's a perfect lead in to our topic for today. Absolutely Welcome to the podcast. Everyone we are in the Holy Spirit series. We're so glad you're here to join us. This week we're getting into the. You know I was thinking about this. We should have started with this. I think maybe we should have started with this episode, okay.
Speaker 2:But this is where the holy spirit has us, this is where we're going to be?
Speaker 1:how to handle it when you don't feel the holy spirit at work in your life? There you go.
Speaker 2:Yes, seasons of drought, seasons dryness, seasons of uncertainty, maybe you've been to church your whole life and you just never felt it. Oh, that could happen interesting.
Speaker 1:So that's where we're at today. We're in in the Holy Spirit series what to do when you don't feel the Holy Spirit.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 1:Selena, have you ever not felt the Holy Spirit going on in your life?
Speaker 2:Oh, yeah, of course, of course.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 2:Yeah, why do you make the?
Speaker 1:face. I'm surprised. I didn't expect that answer, of course.
Speaker 2:Okay, because you know okay. So there are times when you are desperate to grab onto, you're desperate to find it and you're desperate to seek it, but you're not in the right position to receive it and to see it, and seek it you know what I mean. So, for example, I'm feeling very anxious, I'm very stressed, okay, and I'm like, lord, save me, Help me, like I'm sinking, like anxious. I'm very stressed and I'm like, Lord, save me, help me, I'm sinking like Peter.
Speaker 1:And.
Speaker 2:I'm like Lord, save me, help me, storm, Ah, what's going on? And there are times when the Holy Spirit doesn't come quick enough, and so because it's not coming quick enough, or because I'm not tuning my heart and my mind and my faith to be like I am not in a state of danger.
Speaker 1:The.
Speaker 2:Lord is with me, the Lord is present, the Lord is here, I am with God, he is with me. If I'm not putting myself in the position of ultimately lifting up God higher than my faults and my and my and my troubles, then it is. It's hard to find him because I'm thinking he's just going to come in like Superman and save the day. But really I have to reposition my perspective in order for me to be like oh, there you are, oh, I do hear you. Oh, you are present, you know. But if I'm just all over the place and frazzled, oh, you are present, but if I'm just all over the place and frazzled, then I'm not in the right mindset to feel it, and so then I get mad because I'm like you didn't answer me, you didn't call for me.
Speaker 2:You weren't there for me. And then it turns into this whole me against God, me against the Holy Spirit thing, because now I'm getting angry. And so now that's affecting my faith, that's affecting my walk, that's affecting my obedience to worship and to seek him, and so it's all really about perspective, and there have been times in my life where my perspective was off.
Speaker 1:Man, that's good.
Speaker 1:I think this is great. I mean, it's great to get you to open that part of your story up for us to hear that, because I see you and I see you in your word all the time. I see you, like I said, connected to worship so much, and I think it's encouraging for others to hear that, even with all that, you can still have seasons where you're like, where are you God? Yeah, but then your conclusion was that it's kind of all in your head and you have to relax and release for the Holy Spirit to come back. Yeah, but then your conclusion was that it's kind of all in your head and you have to relax and release for the Holy Spirit to come back.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:You winced. There Was that. Am I missing the point? No, no, no, You're there. You're there. I was thinking of the enemy attacks your mind.
Speaker 1:Right yeah.
Speaker 2:He always tries to attack you with your thoughts. You know, even in the Garden of Eden attack you with your thoughts, even in the Garden of Eden started playing mind games with Eve. Did God really say that? So he's always trying to make you second guess and second doubt what you're thinking and what you know is true, when God always speaks the truth. I am always here. I will never abandon you. I will never leave you, I will never forsake you.
Speaker 1:Amen, amen. The scripture that came to mind when you're saying this is we walk by faith, not by sight. That's right, and the sight could be the sight that we're seeing in our mind. The sight could be the sight that we're seeing in person. We're not seeing. So, from my answer to this question that I asked you is I feel like, when I feel like, the holy spirit is not moving in my life, it's because I feel like I'm not getting the answer to the prayers at all it's not.
Speaker 1:Yes, no, wait, it's just nothing. Yeah, just not hearing a response. Yeah, and I go back to we walk by faith and not by sight, and to not lean on my feelings, not lean on my own understanding, trust that God is working on it.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Right, and I mean Job. How long was Job waiting?
Speaker 2:Right and like.
Speaker 1:And so I find myself in those moments where I'm talking to God like God, I know you're there, I know you're in my life, I know you know that you're right here, and I just still I'm like how come you're not moving? Where are you? Why aren't you? But it's not disbelief. I trust that he's going to do something eventually, but it's just you're like God, let's go.
Speaker 2:So last year I felt like I was called to sit down from a lot of my business and ministry and I was called to a season of dormancy where I was just supposed to be present at home and with the kids and with you, and just really help that area of my life. And I was there. I was at this place where I'm like God, what are you doing? What are we doing here? Why am I stressing over this? Should I just get rid of it all? Like, what is the point? What is the purpose? Because I have seen online creators and entrepreneurs who would start at year one and reach six figures.
Speaker 1:So you're playing the compare game.
Speaker 2:And yes, and so I'm seeing people reach six figures, reach seven figures, and their timing of doing it is so small compared to you know, I've been in this for 10 years and I'm struggling to, you know, make it balance with my home life and with kids, and being a mom and all this stuff. And so I'm like really upset. I'm like God, where are you? Like I've been praying the same prayer for 10 years. What's going on? And the word he gave me oh, let's go.
Speaker 2:What I felt, the Holy Spirit tell me because, again, I honestly believe I don't know if this is right or not. God will correct me if it's wrong, but, just like Job and just like David, we are allowed to be raw and ask questions Doesn't necessarily mean that we are entitled to the answers, but we can come into boldness and share our heart, even if our heart is asking those questions. And so I go to God and I'm asking him, like God, why did you make me do this business If this business is not, you know quote unquote thriving, the way I see others, comparing myself what I see other people doing? And Holy Spirit came and checked me, checked me.
Speaker 1:And what check did the Holy Spirit bring to you?
Speaker 2:He said I'm feeding you crumbs.
Speaker 1:Okay.
Speaker 2:You're expecting the meal. I'm feeding you crumbs. Am I not feeding you, even though they are crumbs? Are you not getting fed? Fed, even though it's in crumb form? And I'm like, okay, you're giving me a word here. You're telling me to do this there. You're telling me to minister here, but what about the big thing? What about the big thing? And he's like but I'm feeding you, like you're missing the point. I'm feeding you. I'm feeding you, whether it's in a crumbs or whether it's a feast, I'm feeding you. Are you not being fed? You're not starving. You're not starving. You're not without. It's not a famine. I'm still feeding you, it's just not in the quantity that you expected.
Speaker 1:So you're coming through the season of feeling like the Holy Spirit's not answering your prayer, feeling like the Holy Spirit's not moving. And then boom, holy Spirit gives you a word, gives you an encouragement. Was it the encouragement you wanted? Were you satisfied with that response? Did that make you feel like, oh yeah, the holy spirit is working on me?
Speaker 2:I like to say that the holy spirit checks me, because the holy spirit gives me words and gives me encouragements to remind me of who he is. So was it? Oh, I'm so, let me give you the feast. It's coming next summer, be prepared. No, it wasn't that, but it was like yo, I'm God, and I'm still taking care of you. And look to the lilies, look to the birds. They're not worried. Why are you? And it checks me in a way that's like I am not God.
Speaker 1:You are not a genie, you are God, and no matter what you are good. No matter what.
Speaker 2:And so it reels me back in. It reels me back in and I think a lot of people we expect and sometimes often demand those big God answer, these big questions, and sometimes the words that we receive is a check Like yo, I'm God Chill. Like I got this. You need to understand that I got this. Do you trust that I got this? Okay then, okay, we're done.
Speaker 1:So trust, trusting that, as a believer, the Holy Spirit is in you and is not going anywhere. Yeah, because he will not forsake us.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And relying that at some point the Holy Spirit is going to show up and show you how you've dealt with not feeling the Holy Spirit at work in your life Right, amen, and I think on the likewise. I see that when I'm feeling like that, it's always looking internal right, looking in looking in, looking in, yeah.
Speaker 1:And I find that I have to get outside of myself. And it's in doing the focusing on you, or focusing on our marriage, or focusing on what God has already called me to, I feel like getting back to the calling. Getting back to what God has called me to do, whether it's serving you or serving the kids, or serving a church.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Those kind of things work as a highlighter on the Holy Spirit in my life.
Speaker 2:Okay, go deeper.
Speaker 1:It opens the door for opportunity for the Holy Spirit to encourage me, the Holy Spirit to say, hey, this is what you're called to do, this is you operating in your calling. This is a lesson that I can take away when I'm trying to serve you or trying to serve the kids, or trying to serve in the church. And that, though, that action step of getting outside of myself, yeah, and stop, you know, pick myself up off the floor, get away from the mirror, stop looking at myself. Yeah, start looking at the world around me. It works like a highlighter, and then it's just that's a highlight, and now I can see the Holy Spirit is moving. The Holy Spirit has called me to something.
Speaker 2:So when you move in action and you start doing works around you and serving around you, that is when you feel like the Holy Spirit is most heightened in you to receive and to hear from Him.
Speaker 1:It's just when I'm feeling like where's the Holy Spirit. Where's the Holy Spirit? By getting outside of myself, it highlights where the Holy Spirit is and shows me how the Holy Spirit is working in my life and creates an atmosphere. Atmosphere creates a space for the holy spirit to work. Amen, and I love that. It's rewarding, it's encouraging. I huff because like I feel like it's. It's selfish when I say it like that, because like I'm out there doing it so that I could feel what the holy spirit has for me, I see, but at this.
Speaker 1:You're seeing it as transactional right, but I'm doing it from a heart of ministry. So then it's, and so it's, love-based. I'm not doing it for me, I'm doing it for you, kids, church community.
Speaker 2:So it's not based on the condition of okay, I'm going to go do this volunteer thing because I'm expecting God to speak to me. You're doing it because I love this and I love God, and it brings me joy to do this and love this and I love.
Speaker 1:God, and it brings me joy to do this and, oh, it's a blessing. God, you spoke to me Right? I think now that when you say it like that, it makes me think. Let me go where God is. Let me go where God has put me and get outside of myself, because I think a lot of times it's just all here in my head and I just got to get outside of myself and do something for other people, to to again enlighten where that holy spirit is moving so we talked about holy spirit inside.
Speaker 2:We talked about holy spirit outside yeah where is the holy spirit when it comes to a marriage?
Speaker 2:relationship yeah we talked about holy spirit as from an individual point of view, you know, sometimes getting it from within, sometimes getting it, receiving it from without, in your external environment. How do we get the Holy Spirit to get inside the relationship and inside the marriage? Because there might be people who are, you know, on fire for God and have it, but then their spouse doesn't, or you might have two people who don't have it, you know, or you might have two people who don't have it, you know, or you might have two people who had it and lost it. Like, how do we make sure that the holy spirit is still just a consistent burning flame inside the relationship?
Speaker 1:yeah. So I'm gonna start from the, from the assumption that it's two believers married. Okay, I'm gonna start there and say I think about when we were overworked, over, busy, overdoing everything, yes, not spending quality time together because we were pouring out into our external, outside of the relationship stuff.
Speaker 2:Too much external stuff.
Speaker 1:I think about that and it comes back to what we opened with talking about worship.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:I think the couple can get together and do that. Dude comes back to what we opened with, talking about worship. I think the couple can get together and do that. That's basic. That's put on. Even if you are going back to when you were newlyweds and you had your songs that you loved, when you had no kids running around, or when you were dating and you had no you know nothing, no whole bar, and you were able to just worship freely, go back to those songs and put them on and really just get together to pour your hearts out to God together, alone, one-on-one-on-one with God in the middle. I think that's a huge first step is getting into worship together and then getting into the word.
Speaker 1:It's the big three worship, word and prayer worship together and then getting into the word, it's the big three worship, word and prayer. Doing those three together is what's going to make that atmosphere that I talked about earlier for the Holy Spirit really build in the relationship. So when we thank God when we got through that season and we came on the other side and we needed to really reconnect spiritually season and we came on the other side and we needed to really reconnect spiritually yeah, thank god that when we came through that rough season we had enough, uh, experience because, it was we were about seven years in our into our marriage to say, hey, wait, we got to go back to the basics.
Speaker 1:We got to go back to the abcs here and just do a devotional. We got back. We got into that. Um, love, language is devotional. Yeah, we got into that. Doing Languages devotional yeah, we got into that, doing that daily. We did that when we moved in and we got through that season together by connecting through that and it opened up discussions, it opened up our friendship, it opened up our spiritual connection. I remember we moved in here and we prayed throughout the house and we prayed over all the rooms and we prayed over all the rooms, we prayed over all the spaces and I felt like that was really the, that reactivation of the holy spirit between us, because it had been such a hard season and this was the praying over the house was such a crossing the red sea moment, because once the house was prayed over, I felt in my holy you know my spirit that we were just on a new path. Not only that, we were through the wilderness, through the hardest part.
Speaker 2:Not only that, but when you were doing renovations to the house and we were down to the wood and the frames, we wrote scriptures on the wood. We wrote scriptures in every foundation of each bedroom, yeah, the door frames of each bathroom, like, yeah, on the walls before drywall went up like we wrote scripture and it was just like okay, we claimed the house and then we solidified the word in the house yeah so that moving forward.
Speaker 2:You know, this is where we're at. This is our proclamation in our declaration that this is what we believe in and what we're fighting for.
Speaker 1:God wants priority in our lives. You say all the time he's a jealous God. He wants to be first and by scheduling in worship time in your relationship, by scheduling in devotional time in your day with your partner, with your spouse, to really connect with God together, is going to build that flame of the Holy Spirit, build that fire of the Holy Spirit up to be from a little bit lighter all the way up to a big bonfire.
Speaker 2:I got a challenge for you guys. If you are struggling with feeling the Holy Spirit minister to you in your relationship, if you feel like you cannot hear it, guys, if you feel like he is not leading you as the leader in the house, women, if you feel like the Holy Spirit is not helping you be a better helper in the house, then why don't you guys? And I don't want to hear you know we can't go on a date, we don't have time, we don't have this. The next time you get into your car without children, just get it, go in the driveway, go in the garage If you have to. Okay, like, let's stop, let's cut all the excuses, cut it out, go in the car, devote 20 minutes of of worship. 20 minutes of worship. See what happens. See what happens.
Speaker 2:You will feel a calling to pray. You will feel a calling to tell God who he is. You will feel a calling to remember what he's done. You will feel a calling to love your spouse. You will feel a calling to maybe reconcile, maybe there's an offense that will start boiling up and you're like I got to get this off my chest. You will start to see the Holy Spirit move. What I'm trying to say because you are giving him the time and space to move. And I think a lot of the times there are couples that get so fixated on problems and feelings that we push the time away to let Holy Spirit come in and do his work. That's it, I'm with that.
Speaker 2:So let's cut it out and let's see what happens. Like I want to hear it. If you guys do the 20 minute challenge, we're going to call it hashtag 20 minute Holy Spirit challenge. If you do it, let us know what happens. Respond to us, email us. We want to know what happens. Respond to us. Yes, email us. We want to know what happens because, honestly, I think he could do it in less time. But for human's sake, 20 minutes, give him 20 minutes. See what happens.
Speaker 1:It's four songs, maybe five. It's less than a.
Speaker 2:Netflix episode Right Okay. Right, it's less than a Netflix episode. It takes more time for some people to go to the bathroom I'm just being real. It takes more time to cook a meal. I'm just saying 20 minutes. See what happens. Open it up. I think a lot of times we do all the fluff and we create all this pizzazz and we feel like we don't have the environment or we don't have the right song or we don't have the right place to do it. God can move anywhere, Anywhere anytime.
Speaker 2:At any time and he'll be able to tell you something, but we don't give him the time of day that's good that scheduling that time, making that time, creating that space for the Holy Spirit to move, will cause results.
Speaker 1:You will see it, you will feel it and you will be changed. You will reactivate that Holy Spirit. I can testify to that over and over and over.
Speaker 2:And you know one thing about a fire is you have to keep feeding it. You know, okay, let's get to fire basics in order to start a fire, like, yes, you could throw cardboard there and a bunch of lighter fluid and then foof, there's a huge flame, right, but it's a very short flame. Yeah, it's only going to last for so long temporary, because it's not built to last. Okay, it's a cheap way of getting a big fire and it's going to go away very soon.
Speaker 2:What you need to do is you start small. You start with the starter, you start with the sticks, the tiny twigs, the kindling right, and you make that fire grow from within so that it gets hot enough to burn logs over a long period of time. And as you continue to feed this fire, now you have the strength, now you have log size faith right. You started with the Kindle, you started with the sticks and that produced a fire, and so you continue to feed it. You feed it. Log size faith. Log size action. Log size time right. Log size interest, log size service right. Going out and serving others and loving others. Then your fire and your flame will just get bigger and it will stand longer.
Speaker 1:Let's go, that's beautiful. Beautiful encouragement no, I'm serious. Beautiful, practical things that couples can do together, to just start, that. The daily devotional, the 20 minute worship, building it into your schedule, all those things will reactivate Practical person. Get outside of your head and get into some external worship and that Holy Spirit will just burn bright inside of you with the kindling, with the little logs built up to the big fire burning that we all crave as believers.
Speaker 2:If you've never felt the Holy Spirit move in your life and you want to have the Holy Spirit move in your life, I believe it's just a matter of faith. If you believe that you can feel it, if you believe that you will encounter it, if you believe that he can come upon you and guide you and minister to you and intercede with you, then that's all you need. It sounds so simplistic and I promise you it is that simplistic. The Bible tells us time and time again in the book of Acts you just need to believe. Okay, the Gentiles? They were not Jewish, they did not do any of the Jewish customs to receive God. They believed and the Holy Spirit came upon them, just as the Jewish community did, and their lives were changed. They moved in confidence, they moved in boldness, they were able to move and do the works of Jesus and to speak and share His gospel because they believed.
Speaker 2:Amen Same could be said with you.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:Partners. If you have a spouse who is just struggling with feeling the Holy Spirit, pray for them. Pray with them. Yes, be in that communion with them. Don't leave them hanging and just be like, oh, they're not at my level. We must not be equally yoked, like no, bro, god puts you together. Use your faith, teach them how to build the fire.
Speaker 1:Okay, yes, yes, that's beautiful, bo. For this episode, for this series, for the Holy Spirit to reactivate in your life, to feel the Holy Spirit that we've been through this month are all meant to make the relationship stronger, to make the love deeper, to make the understanding between partners, between spouses, deeper. That's what we're here for. That's what we're about at. Love by Faith, that's right. Loving by faith through the Holy Spirit. I think it's a great spot to close in prayer.
Speaker 2:It's a great spot to close the series.
Speaker 1:yes, Lord, I give you the glory for all of it your words, your ways. Lord, your Holy Spirit is at work in us, in this place, in this ministry. Lord, I pray that your Holy Spirit would be at work in the lives of our listeners, Lord, that they would feel your fire burning. Spirit would be at work in the lives of our listeners, Lord, that they would feel your fire burning, that they would be able to rekindle, that, to really put that fire to action, Lord, outside of themselves. Lord, that they would pair their faith with their actions and make a difference for this world, for you, Lord, and that they would just be ignited with a new Holy Spirit passion inside of them. We give you glory for all of it, God. We just pray for safety around all those listening and we just give you glory in Jesus' name, Amen, Amen. Amen.

Speaker 1:Don't just think by faith, don't just act by faith, love by faith.
Speaker 2:Yes, take care Bye.
Speaker 1:I'm glad you saw what I was doing there at the end. I didn't know if you were going to I try to jump in.
Speaker 2:It's like double dutch. A lot of times I miss it. I'm like like dang it. I missed the love by faith part I've never double dutched I tried. I've gotten it, but I didn't. I couldn't keep it, yeah yeah, interesting.
Speaker 1:I wonder if today's kids know what double dutch is maybe, dude, that's.
Speaker 2:All we had was double dutch. We had some hula hoops, we had the kickballs and we had the fence, that's it we had the parking lot super dangerous.
Speaker 1:Uh, playground equipment. Yeah, I remember one school I went to they had the is like a funnel ball. I don't know, but it's a funnel like. It's a weird cone shaped thing oh, and then it has the four spouts sticking out oh yeah four kids can play, and you throw the ball in the middle and it just falls out of one of the holes randomly, and so everyone gets to. Just who?
Speaker 2:came up with these games.
Speaker 1:I think it was like the 80s, what. I think it was the 80s that and we learned tetherball in gym. Did you ever learn?
Speaker 2:oh yeah, no, that's, that's dangerous I will not. You're anti-sports I don't like balls but yeah, the sports footballs no tetherball was.
Speaker 1:I don't know. I felt like it was advantage to the, to the tall people or in whoever served, because if you could just serve and just get the ball going up high, you know, there was no, I don't know, maybe I didn't play it enough, but I didn't play it at all.
Speaker 2:You can keep that 80s. You can keep that 80s.
Speaker 1:You can keep that back in the 80s, right where it belongs. Man, I gotta go, I gotta go.
Speaker 2:No, I gotta go, Kyle. I got things to do today.
Speaker 1:Have a great day.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you have a great day. No, you have a great day. You have a great day. You have a great day, sir. I said good day.
